How does dental hygiene work at Cham?

First we examine the teeth. If periodontitis is present, we measure the depth of the gum pockets. Then we gently and thoroughly remove plaque and tartar above and below the gums and in the gum pockets.

We use both ultrasonic and mechanical instruments to achieve the best results. For this cleaning we use new, modern equipment from the Swiss manufacturer EMS Electro Medical Systems (Airflow technology). The proven powder from EMS enables gentle, safe and efficient removal of biofilm, stains and tartar.

The interdental spaces are then cleaned with dental floss or interdental brushes, allowing the surfaces to be polished smooth. The final step is to treat the teeth with a special fluoride varnish. This delays the return of plaque and bacterial plaque.

How does plaque form?

The mouth is moist and warm. This provides ideal conditions for the growth of various types of bacteria. Some of these bacteria can attach themselves to the hard surface of your teeth.

They form a bacterial film called plaque. Plaque is an accumulation of microorganisms on the teeth, usually along the gums.

How does gingivitis develop?

The bacterial biofilm sticks to the tooth surface. It cannot be removed by rinsing, but must be removed mechanically. The bacteria in the biofilm produce toxins that irritate the gums and cause inflammation (gingivitis).

Incipient gingivitis does not cause pain at first, so it often goes unnoticed. However, you may notice that your gums bleed when you brush your teeth. If plaque is removed thoroughly every day, the inflammation can heal within a few days.

How does tartar form?

Tartar is formed by the calcification of plaque. The minerals come from saliva.

Tartar is rough and provides an ideal environment for new bacteria to grow. It also irritates the gums. This process promotes the inflammation that has already developed. The more minerals there are in the saliva and the worse the oral hygiene, the faster tartar forms.

Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed by a dental hygienist or dentist. The frequency of dental hygiene visits is determined on an individual basis. It depends, among other things, on the bacterial composition and individual oral hygiene.

At Dental Hygiene Cham, we do everything we can to ensure that you are well looked after. In this way you can preserve your teeth for a lifetime.

How does periodontitis (gum disease) develop?

When large amounts of plaque irritate the gums for years, inflammation can spread deep into the gums. Gum inflammation (gingivitis) becomes periodontitis (periodontosis) and attacks the bone.

Why this happens in some patients and not in others is not fully understood. However, certain types of bacteria have been shown to favour the progression of the disease. Smoking and diabetes are also known risks. That is why it is important to prevent plaque and the inflammation around periodontitis.

Inflammation causes the gums to loosen. The root of the tooth is no longer full and a gum pocket forms. Bacteria accumulate under the gums. Inflammation can spread down the root of the tooth. This gradually destroys the bony base of the tooth.

The speed of this process depends on the aggressiveness of the bacteria and the resistance of the person. Periodontitis is usually painless. The loss of bone masks the swelling of the gums. However, as periodontitis progresses, the exposed tooth root may become visible.

Early detection of periodontitis and appropriate treatment can stop the inflammation. This also leads to regeneration of the gums and the tooth bed. This results in long-term tooth preservation.

Why is professional dental care necessary?

Bacteria under the gums can only be removed by professional dental cleaning. If this is not done, the bone will continue to deteriorate and, in the worst case, lead to the loss of the affected tooth. Many studies have shown that smoking accelerates this process.

Periodontitis can increase the risk of systemic diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, arthritis and diabetes. Dental caries is also caused by plaque and bacterial remnants.

The biofilm is kept under control by good oral hygiene combined with regular professional tooth cleaning. Repeating this regularly is important for maintaining good health. In addition, any periodontitis can be treated at an early stage.
